Left Behind by Douglas Black #newgayromance

leftbehindfinal

Left Behind is an MM erotic romance set in the Scottish Highlands. It is the first book in my new Abducted Hearts series that is being released as part of Loose Id Publishing’s Three for the Holidays range. Book Two, Highland Gathering, is coming soon and the final installment, Haunted Heart will release in February!

BLURB

Stewart is instantly attracted to Gary, but he isn’t sure he’s ready to date again. Gary wants Stewart, but he doesn’t think Stewart will stick around when he finds out the secret Gary is hiding.

Faced with the prospect of spending Christmas alone with his daughter, Havana, in the house he used to share with his husband, widower Stewart Robertson heads north to a campsite in Glen Coe in the Scottish Highlands. There, he meets Gary James, an American parapsychologist with beliefs very different to Stewart’s own.

The sexual attraction is instantaneous, and overwhelming, and when Gary asks Stewart to spend Christmas with him and his friends in Fort William, Stewart agrees. Knowing next to nothing about each other, the two quickly start a physical relationship.

Stewart, emotional, angry and still reeling from the recent death of his husband, doesn’t know if he’s ready to start dating again, but he can’t deny that he wants Gary, a man who is keeping a secret that threatens to derail any chance of a happy ending before they even get started.

EXCERPT

“If we’re going,” Stewart said after Lucas finished explaining his plan, “you need to go tell your dad.”

“My dad?” Lucas looked confused.

“Yep. He doesn’t even know I’m here with you. You’ll need to tell him.”

“Can I tell my uncle instead?”

That threw Stewart off his stride. He fought the urge to roll his eyes. “Who are you camping with?”

“My uncle.”

“Then yes, it would be easier to tell your uncle. I thought he was your dad.”

“No. My dad’s in Iraq.”

Right. So not much point calling him, then, Stewart thought. He never had been good at understanding the way children’s minds worked.

Instead of admitting that, Stewart gestured for Lucas to go. He took Havana inside to get ready, and when he emerged from the kata, Lucas’s uncle was taking up far too much room on the decking outside, armed with two camping chairs and a cooler.

“Snacks,” he said in an American accent Stewart didn’t even try to place. He flashed Stewart a blinding smile, his height forcing Stewart to look up at him.

He transferred the cooler and folded camping chairs into one hand before extending the free one for Stewart to shake. Stewart did and earned another of those jolts of attraction. It was worse the second time around, with the skin contact and that dark, intense gaze on him. The man’s hands were big, his grip strong, but his skin was soft. Warm. Stewart cleared his throat.

“Gary,” the man said.

Stewart knew he was staring, not letting go of Gary’s hand. The man’s height and build and presence made Stewart feel like he was caught in a tractor beam, frozen in place and rendered incapable of movement or speech. But inside, Stewart’s mind was racing a million miles an hour. He was chastising himself in no uncertain terms for behaving as he was. For feeling the way he was. For even noticing how much stronger Gary was compared to him, and for remembering Gary naked earlier that morning and wishing he had stayed longer.

Already it felt like an imperfect memory. Hairy chest, muscular body, impressive cock. He was mad at himself for focusing on the latter. For immediately fixating on how much he wanted to fuck. Get fucked. Even just be held in strong arms, feel that smile directed at him from someone who clearly thought there was still stuff worth smiling about. Because it didn’t seem to matter how much time Stewart spent with Havana, how tightly he hugged her, and how much he worried about her, he was lonely. So lonely, sometimes he wondered if he was going to die from it. And that was a drama-queen thought by anyone’s standard, but sometimes it was true. It was like the pain. A seemingly endless state from which there was no escape.

“Now, back in the States, this is the point where the other person gives their name.”

Stewart crashed back to reality in time to jerk his hand out of Gary’s. He took a deep breath. This is the part where you decide I’m batshit crazy and should in no way be allowed near either you or your son. Nephew. Whatever.

“Stewart,” he managed. “Sorry, my brain’s away with the fairies.” Wasn’t that the truth?

Gary flashed him another smile, and Stewart had to take a step back. He shook his head, forced a laugh, then said, “I haven’t been sleeping. Hence coming here to get away from it all, but that hasn’t worked either. My head’s not in the game. This is Havana. Your nephew’s been doing a great job keeping her entertained all morning.”

“So I’ve been told.” Gary turned his attention to Havana, allowing Stewart the opportunity to give the man another once-over.

Baggy waterproof trousers, expensive walking boots, and a quality branded outdoor jacket. Gary looked every inch like he belonged in the great outdoors, with the exception of the black T-shirt with luminous green alien face and the writing The Truth is Out There picked out in silver underneath. People tended to wear their oldest, least-favorite clothes when there was a chance of them getting muddy, Stewart reasoned. He turned his thoughts back to Gary, who was calling Havana a little lady and offering her a bow.

“I hear we’re off to do some exploring by the river, maybe see if we can rent some bikes?” Gary said when he straightened.

The bikes were a new addition to the plan. It seemed Lucas made things up as he went along. Or waited until he had initial approval before adding additional details.

“Seems that way,” Stewart said.

Gary looked at Lucas. He grinned. “Lead on, dude.”

Guest Post: Douglas Black Shares A Sneak Peek Of His New Story

WhoHeUsedToBe

Who He Used To Be

Douglas Black

Sometimes it takes a stranger to remind you who you used to be.

Who He Used To Be is an MM erotic romance short story, originally published in 2013 by Secret Cravings publishing. When Secret Cravings closed their doors a few months ago, the rights to the story reverted to me and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to re-edit and bring this story to a bigger audience.

Blurb

When Jeff, the man Connor moved across an ocean to spend the rest of his life with, announces their relationship is no longer working, Connor is caught unawares. Without Jeff, Connor has no reason to stay in Florida, but he doesn’t want to return to Scotland.

An impromptu visit to a nightclub leads to Connor meeting Parker, a man nothing like clean-cut Jeff and a lot more like the bad-boys Connor used to go for back in Glasgow’s biker bars.

A one-night-stand becomes something more, but the two barely have any time together before Connor is hit by another bolt from the blue.

Jeff decides he wants Connor back, and his offer to start over means Connor has to make a decision. Return to the security of his relationship with Jeff, or jump in at the deep end with Parker and find out if he still remembers how to swim.

Excerpt

“Hey,” Connor said.

“You don’t look like you belong here.” The man’s voice was deep, and he spoke slowly, almost lazily. Connor liked that.

“I just got out of work.”

The man nodded and gestured to the bartender. A few moments later, another bottle of beer was placed in front of Connor along with a glass of coke. Judging by the easy smile on the man’s lips and his complete disregard for personal space, Connor was willing to bet the coke wasn’t virgin.

“And you thought instead of going home, you’d come here. Somewhere that’s not your usual hangout. Somewhere you’re unlikely to be caught…by your boyfriend?”

Connor laughed and picked up his drink. “Partly,” he said, holding the bottle close to his lips. “Except for the boyfriend part.”

The man nodded and let go of Connor’s shoulder. He took a long swig of his drink.

“Is that why you’re here? This doesn’t exactly look like your scene either.”

The man smirked. He bit his bottom lip. “I’m babysitting,” he said, nodding at the bottle-blond guy Connor had been staring at before.

Connor knew dreadlocks weren’t hereditary, but, “Your brother?”

“Cousin. He’s just moved here. I thought he might need a little supervision.”

“Looks like he’s got things covered.”

The man shrugged. “I’m Parker, by the way. I caught you checking him out. You didn’t look very impressed.”

Connor took another swig from his bottle of beer before moving a step closer to Parker. In those baggy jeans it was hard to tell, and Connor wanted to know if Parker was really interested. Connor made a move he hadn’t used in years and rubbed up against Parker’s groin, concealing his real intentions by whispering in Parker’s ear.

“He’s not my type. I prefer my men a little rough around the edges.”

Connor felt a rush of heat on his neck as Parker let out a breath that was too heavy to signify anything other than arousal.

Parker drained the contents of his glass before looking at Connor again. He stepped to the side, moving away from Connor, teasing as he pulled his lip between white teeth. Connor waited and Parker reached for him. He locked his fingers in the long hair tied in a ponytail at the nape of Connor’s neck. He pulled Connor towards him, making Connor close the distance between them again. Connor didn’t resist.

The first press of Parker’s lips against his own seemed to amplify the alcohol in Connor’s system. The banging base of the music melted to a thudding beat that dictated how Connor’s hips thrust against Parker’s, how their hands wound and pulled in each other’s hair. When Parker’s lips parted, Connor dived inside, wanting to lick away the taste of cheap bourbon to get right down to the taste of the man himself.

Parker’s hands left Connor’s hair and landed back on Connor’s hips. He moved Connor, rubbing their erections together until kissing was becoming damn near impossible. Connor kept pulling away to suck breath down into his lungs and Parker stole it from him every time he brought their lips back together.

“Jesus,” Parker said, breaking the kiss. He rested his forehead against Connor’s. Connor couldn’t take his eyes off the smile playing on Parker’s lips. “Where’d you learn to kiss like that?”

Connor laughed, still rocking his hips against Parker’s. “Glasgow. Heard of it?”

Parker nodded. “I’m going to have to add it to my list of places to visit.”

“Do that… but, not tonight.”

“No. I have other plans for tonight.”

Friday Five: Douglas Black

Hi all! This week’s guest for Friday Five is author Douglas Black. Thanks for joining us this week, Douglas.

So, Douglas, what kind of books do you read for fun?

I spend a terrifying amount of time on my Kindle.

Easily fifty percent of what’s on there are MM erotic romances. Partly, that’s because I like to know what’s going on in the genre I write in, but really it’s got more to do with me being a massive fan of a great number of MM authors. I always have my eyes peeled for a new release by people like James Lear or Josh Lanyon. Their work can never come out quickly enough for me!

The rest of the space is taken up with crime fiction or political/satirical works. I’m obsessed with ‘Tartan Noir’ (if you don’t know what that is, I urge you to look it up!) A real favourite ¬– one I can read over and over again – is Not The End Of The World by Christopher Brookmyre, although anything he writes is fine by me!

What’s the one thing you can’t live without?

You’d think given what I just said about my Kindle, I’d pick that, but the truthful answer is my phone (I’ve got the Kindle app on there!).

I’m fortunate to have a number of genuinely amazing friends ¬– the type that would do more than just help you get rid of a body – but unfortunately they’ve decided to fling themselves all over the world. Without my phone, and all the different apps that I use to stay in touch with them, I’d be a very lonely Douglas!

If a genie granted you three wishes, what would they be?

Tough one. I’m going to go for world peace, an end to all hunger, and a self-cleaning kitchen.

What is best writing advice you can give?

“Write.” I know how rubbish that sounds, but really it’s the only advice anyone can give. You’ll discover a process that works for you in time, but until then just keeping filling in the blank page with words. First drafts are usually hideous, but the more material you cram into them, the happier you’ll be when rewrite time comes around!

Can you share a little about your current release with us?
DB_PortInAStorm
(Available October 14 from Loose Id)

Port In A Storm follows Alex, a young university graduate, working a dead-end job to avoid joining the family law firm like his father wants. Jake is a perpetual traveller, handsome and worldly with his fair share of emotional baggage and an attitude towards life that Alex adores.

With Jake’s itchy feet making it impossible for the man to stay in one place for too long, their relationship starts out as a series of hook-ups in unlikely places – an airport sleeping POD, a caravan in Bamburgh, a Venetian townhouse – but soon these brief meetings aren’t enough and that leaves Alex with a new problem to worry about.

It seems no one has ever been able to tame the wandering man, so if Alex wants Jake it looks like it’s going to cost him. Alex is going to have to decide what price he is willing to pay to be happy, before Jake and Alex’s family’s patience runs out.

DB_TheBucketList

The Bucket List by Douglas Black

The Bucket List is an M/M erotic novella that tells the story of Kade, a Glaswegian accountant recently dumped by his verbally abusive, long-term boyfriend Niall. Kade’s friends think his relationship has caused him to become introverted and stuck in his ways so, to try to help him, they write a bucket list. Kade isn’t exactly convinced by this plan, but he reluctantly goes along with it, only to discover it’s true: bucket lists really can change your life.

The Bucket List was released by Loose Id Publishing on August 5th.

Blurb

When Kade Doherty gets dumped, he expects sympathy from his friends. Instead, he gets a bucket list. His friends want to help him enjoy life again, but Kade isn’t convinced a list of outlandish leisure pursuits will help much with that. To keep the peace he goes along with the plan and in the process, he meets Blake.

Blake’s Australian accent and surfer-boy looks are the stuff of sexual fantasies and Kade surprises everyone – including himself – when he wastes no time making a move.

Kade goes with Blake into the Scottish highlands, but just as he is beginning to get used to life with his very own Mr. Australia, reality comes knocking. Kade’s newfound happiness falls apart when his abusive ex demands they meet. Blake senses something is wrong and he wants to help, but Kade knows he can’t confide in Blake.

After all, Kade hasn’t exactly been honest. He might feel like a different man when he’s with Blake, but Kade knows he’s still just an accountant from Glasgow with slight obsessive compulsions and a bucket list that someone else wrote. He knows Blake won’t hang around, let alone help, when he finds out the truth.

Or will he?

Excerpt

Kade looked up at the unfamiliar facade of the building in front of him. If he hadn’t just checked his location for the third time, using both the sat-nav on his phone and the one in his car, he would have sworn he must have taken a wrong turn when he reached the unfamiliar streets of Glasgow’s East End.

Unlike the supermarket he normally frequented, this one had no branding or signage to speak of. There were no garish colors and definitely no cheesy logos. If it had an official name, the owners clearly didn’t think it was worth sharing with their customers.

The building looked like a windowless warehouse, and the car park, devoid of neatly painted grid lines and pointless shrubbery, was just a gravel-covered, pothole-ridden piece of ground hemmed in by a giant metal fence. If it hadn’t been for the steady stream of people coming and going through the single-door entrance, Kade wouldn’t have known if the shop was open or closed.

He sighed and leaned against the bonnet of his car. All he really wanted to do was get back behind the wheel and drive back to what was familiar. The temptation was almost overwhelming. It wasn’t like he hadn’t had enough changes and uncertainties to deal with recently without dragging the weekly shopping into the mix. He pulled out his phone and scrolled down until he found Ian’s number. Ian answered on the second ring.

“I’m standing outside an Asian supermarket. Are you happy now?”

“That depends,” Ian said. “Are you actually going to go inside, or are you just planning on standing in the car park, biting your bottom lip and looking at your feet?”

Kade looked up from his boots and removed the phone from his ear momentarily so he could stare at it instead. He heard Ian’s laughter through the handset.

“Fuck you very much,” Kade said under his breath when he put the phone back to his ear.

“And you. I’ll see you tonight. You know, I’m impressed. Doing two things outside of your comfort zone in one day? Hell, the council must be pumping chemicals into the water again.”

“Yeah, yeah. Very funny.” Ian was still laughing when Kade rang off and slipped his phone back into his pocket.

Ian’s jokes didn’t feel very funny to Kade at the moment, and his behavior had nothing to do with too much fluoride in the city’s water supply, as Ian well knew. Instead, it had everything to do with that stupid bloody list.

The bucket list. His bucket list. Only it wasn’t really his at all, because Kade hadn’t had any say in whether or not he wanted a bucket list, let alone what he wanted to put on it. Ian and his boyfriend, Paul, had drawn it up the morning after Kade had shown up on Ian’s doorstep, shouting and ranting and crying because Niall had left.
